HOW WE MAKE YOUR QUILT
Knot Forgotten Quiltsinfo@knotforgottenquilts.com
Knot Forgotten Quilts starts from scratch with each and every T-Shirt Quilt order we receive. We don't have a cookie cutter pattern when we start. We design each and every quilt very carefully to make your graphics get noticed. This is your t-shirt quilt and we want to hear your thoughts. You have options for the feel of your quilt with Knot Forgotten Quilts. We make a quilt that you will be proud to display AND want to use.
All quilts are made in layers. The first layer is your clothing items. We can use almost any item of clothing in the T-Shirt quilt. T-Shirts, sweatshirts, dress shirts, bandanas, scarves, jeans, patches, etc. The items are carefully cut to various size squares and rectangles to use in your T-Shirt Quilt. For design enhancement, we may use portions of your shirts to make what we call "filler" squares. Filler squares are great to increase the size of your t-shirt quilt, and also adds color (school colors or favorite colors) to your quilt to enhance the overall look.
The second layer, called "batting" is inside the quilt and adds warmth and loft to your quilt. We use only the best, "Warm and Natural Premium Cotton batting" in our T-Shirt quilts and Memory Quilts.
The final layer is the back of your quilt and you have choices for your material. We use only the best anti-pill fleece, Premium Kona Cotton solids or Sweatshirt Fleece. All the options are perfect for T-shirt Quilts and Memory Quilts.

We have many options for borders and are happy to design them for you. Borders can be solid, pieced squares, or any combination. Borders are a great way to incorporate school colors that may not be included in your T-Shirts. For example, your high school colors may be maize and blue and your college colors may be green and white. We can design a T-shirt quilt that incorporates colors to honor your alma mater.

QUILTING
When the border is added (if desired) and all layers are together, they must be secured. There are several methods used to attach these layers together. Hand quilting, machine quilting, machine tacking, and hand tying are all methods of finishing a quilt. At Knot Forgotten Quilts we use machine quilting. Machine quilting is sewing through all the layers in a long continuous stitch to hold the layers together. This can be a straight line of stitching from quilt edge to edge, or a design of some sort. Our wavy diamond design is a favorite, and you can see it in the image below. As you can imagine, this takes a great deal of time to plan, prepare, and stitch your entire quilt. At Knot Forgotten Quilts we have experienced quilters who will design a pattern that fits your quilt.

TWO COLOR BINDING
The final step is to add BINDING to your T-shirt quilt. This finishes the raw edges of your quilt. We machine stitch the binding and use two colors of material to give extra contrast to your quilt. This is another feature that Knot Forgotten Quilts goes above and beyond to give you a unique, beautiful and amazing t-shirt or memory quilt.
YOUR PART...
Gather up your T-Shirts, jerseys, bandanas, logos, patches, scarves, socks, hats, pjs, etc.
-
Wash and dry all items. This step is VERY IMPORTANT and ensures that they will not shrink and the dye will not bleed in the finished quilt. Depending on the garments you use in your quilt, most quilts are machine washable. BUT, don't let the first time an article is washed be AFTER it is sewn into your quilt.

-
Identify all graphics that you DO NOT WANT in your quilt. Obvious graphics may be vendor advertising on the backs of shirts. You can use masking tape to identify these unwanted graphics, or safety pins with a note attached also work very well. Anything to identify you do not want the graphic in your quilt is fine.

If you have a favorite graphic that you want centered or otherwise "highlighted", please identify to the designer.

Please don't wait until the last minute to place your order. There are certain times of the year that are busy. We try to finish each quilt within a 4 week period. If there are multiple orders however, we will need more time. We don't hurry, every quilt is very, very important to us.

We can design your quilt from start to finish. However, some people like to help with color choices and that is perfectly ok with us. Decisions that will need to be made are:
-
Fabric for the back of your quilt. Sweatshirt Fleece is extremely popular as it feels just like a cozy sweatshirt when you wrap up with your quilt. Our other favorites are Premium Kona Cotton and Anti-Pill Fleece. If you prefer a different fabric please ask! We aim to please and we can use the fabric of your choice.
-
Color choice for the back of your quilt. The Premium Kona Cotton comes in just about every color. Anti-pill fleece also comes in a variety of colors. The Sweatshirt Fleece is our most popular choice. It comes in Navy, Black, Charcoal Grey, Light/Heather Grey and White.
-
Decide the size quilt you hope to have made with your items. If you have a specific size bed for your quilt, please take appropriate measurements. Remember that bedspreads hang to the floor on the sides and end of the bed. Comforters lay on top and over the top mattress of your bed. The dimensions on our pricing page are standard sizes of comforters. It is best if you measure your bed, just to be sure.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to call us. We will work with you to make your quilt exactly as you want.

LAST - BUT NOT LEAST - DO NOT CUT ANYTHING - WE DO THE CUTTING!!
